Spanish giants considering surprise move for out-of-favour Chelsea forward

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has reportedly become a surprise transfer target for La Liga defending champions, Barcelona.

With Luis Suarez out until May due to a knee injury, the Spanish heavyweights are keen to sign in a new centre forward, either on a short or long-term basis.

According to Sport, La Liga giants may attempt to take advantage of Frenchman’s situation at Stamford Bridge in the coming days and lure him at Nou Camp before the end of the winter transfer window.

As a result of being third in the pecking order under Frank Lampard and having less than six months left on his current deal, the 33-year-old will be allowed to depart from Stamford Bridge for the right price.

The France international had appeared destined to be reunited with his former head-coach Antonio Conte at Inter Milan, only for the Serie A title challengers to consider alternatives to the World Cup-winning forward.

While no official approach has been made, the report claims that Frenchman is high on Quique Setien’s shortlist and his relationship with Antonie Griezmann could play a key factor in a deal between Chelsea and Barcelona.

Giroud has played five Premier League games for Frank Lampard’s side this season and with Luis Suarez out Frenchman could have chance to increase his first-team minutes.
