Chelsea are allegedly planning to make move for Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Frank Lampard’s side struggles at the defensive end as they have managed to concede 24-goals thus far and it has been the worst record in the top 10 of the Premier League table.
Having successfully appealed a FIFA ban, Chelsea are likely to make additions in January in order to remain on top-four.
While the West London club have been rumoured with a wide range of names, priority is likely to be placed on strengthening a backline which has only kept four clean sheets in 24 games this campaign.
According to The Telegraph, their former player Nathan Ake has emerged as a potential transfer target for Frank Lampard, with the Englishman said to be prepared to spend £40m in order to lure Dutchman back at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old suffered a hamstring injury against the Merseyside Reds on Saturday afternoon, although that is unlikely to prevent the West London club from retaining an interest in a player who can play on centre-back or left-back position.
However, the report adds that the Blues will keep close tabs on the performances of Antonio Rudiger, who has been sidelined for much of the campaign, before making a final decision over whether to sign Dutch defender.
