Chelsea 23-year-old powerhouse getting closer to make return from Achilles injury

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s recovery from a serious Achilles injury appears to be going well after the Chelsea midfielder posted a video of himself pedalling on a bike on Twitter.

The 23-year-old ruptured his Achilles while playing for Chelsea against New England Revolution in a charity game in May on the eve of last season’s Europa League final.

The severity of the injury meant that Loftus-Cheek had to undergo surgery in the summer and he was expected to miss a significant chunk of the season as a result.

However, Loftus-Cheek has responded well to his rehabilitation and could return to first-team training over the next few weeks should he continue to make sufficient progress.

Loftus-Cheek enjoyed a breakthrough of sorts at Stamford Bridge last season, featuring 40 times in all competitions and scoring ten goals overall after establishing himself under Maurizio Sarri.

The England international was rewarded for his progress in 2018-19 with a new five-year contract in July and he is reportedly a key part of Frank Lampard’s plans moving forward.

Reports last month suggested that Lampard is toying with the idea of deploying Loftus-Cheek as a central striker once he returns although Tammy Abraham has since been in excellent goalscoring form.
