Revealed: Frank Lampard and Jurgen Klopp shared a joke during Super Cup match

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits he wasn’t best pleased that Wednesday’s Super Cup went to extra-time and shared a joke about the situation with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the 36th minute but Sadio Mane levelled the scores moments after the restart, with neither team able to make a breakthrough in normal time.

Mane quickly put the Champions League holders ahead in extra-time but his effort was cancelled out by a controversial Jorginho penalty, before Liverpool sealed another piece of silverware in the penalty shootout.

But the draining match in Istanbul was far from ideal preparation for either team ahead of the weekend’s Premier League action, and Lampard made light of the situation with Klopp during the game.

Asked if he would reward his players for their latest triumph, Klopp told reporters: ‘Actually we don’t have time for that, we play on Saturday again. We have to find a way to be ready for that game.

‘After 90 minutes I think, when it was close to the final whistle, Frank Lampard asked me, “Where do you play and when do you play?” And I said, “Saturday at Southampton.” And he said, “Oh, congratulations”.

‘Nobody wanted extra-time tonight. They play Sunday at home to Leicester, but they have played on Sunday [last week] so there was no advantage tonight, but for the next game it will be pretty tough.

‘But we have to be ready again and that’s my present to the players, to help them recover that they are ready for the game. They don’t ask for anything like that, it was a big fight tonight.

‘I didn’t know before the game how good it would feel when you win it, but it’s brilliant, it’s really big. The atmosphere in the stadium was outstanding, it shows again wherever we go, our supporters are already there. I don’t know how many fans were from Istanbul but I can only say thank you to Istanbul because it was just a brilliant atmosphere.

‘We would have loved to bring our weather to Turkey for one day because it was really intense, but it’s done. We came through. We won it and the boys feel really good, I feel really good, so everything is okay.’
