Ruben Loftus-Cheek will only sign a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge if Chelsea assure him of a regular place in the first-team next season, reports say.
The midfielder is a big favourite among the Chelsea fans, but started just six Premier League games under Maurizio Sarri this campaign.
Loftus-Cheek has played regularly in the Europa League and Chelsea are eager to tie the 23-year-old to a new deal – his current contract expires in 2021. However, the Sun claim Loftus-Cheek will only extend his stay at Chelsea if he is given playing time assurances by the club.
Loftus-Cheek feels he deserved to start more games under Sarri and could wait to see how Chelsea’s transfer ban plays out. Fifa rejected Chelsea’s appeal of their two-window ban, but the Blues are expected to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
If Chelsea are blocked from signing any new players in the next two windows, the club will be forced to rely on their homegrown talent, like Loftus-Cheek, and their current crop of players.
Chelsea will offer Loftus-Cheek a lucrative new deal and the Englishman is expected to start against Arsenal in the Europa League final. Loftus-Cheek has played a pivotal part in Chelsea’s run to the final, scoring in the semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.
